The SUN is the star that lies at the centre of our planetary system. It is a commonplace star, 5 billion years old and with another 5 billion years of life to come. Produced by the collapse of a cloud of gas and dust located towards the edge of the galaxy, the SUN has a temperature of 15 million degrees at its core and 6 thousand degrees at the surface.
