Comet

  Collection Discovery video glossary

A COMET is a dark ball of ice and dust. When its trajectory takes it close to the sun, heat turns the ice into gas and eats away at the nucleus, sometimes dissipating it. As it heads away from the sun, the COMET turns into a ball of ice again and follows an orbit that will bring it back near the sun years later.
