ALCOHOL is a toxic liquid. After ingestion, it passes through the wall of the digestive tract and spreads throughout the bloodstream and into cells within an hour. It affects chemical transmitters and nerve endings in the brain. Only the liver can break it down, but does so very slowly and laboriously.
