ANAESTHESIA consists of inducing a controlled coma in a patient so as to be able to operate on them with no risk or pain. Once anaesthetised, the patient is placed under respiratory and cardiac assistance for the duration of the operation. When the anaesthesia wears off, the body begins to react again and can feel pain resulting from the operation.
