Soil

  Collection Environment video glossary

SOIL takes thousands of years to form from continental rocks. Once rock is fragmented by heat and cold, atmospheric gases and rain break it down into mineral dust, which becomes food for micro-organisms, lichens and mosses. When they die and decompose, their organic matter joins with the minerals to form the SOIL.
