Fission

  Collection Atom video glossary

Nuclear FISSION consists of splitting a heavy nucleus by striking it with a neutron. The nucleus then splits into radioactive fragments and emits 2 or 3 neutrons that hit other nuclei, resulting in a chain reaction. This phenomenon, extremely rare in nature, is used in nuclear reactors, with the FISSION of uranium cores.
